SUMMARY:Carbon Plan Rally & Public Hearing: Charlotte
DESCRIPTION:April 10\, 2024  |  5:00pm Rally  |  7:00pm Public Hearing\nMecklenburg County Courthouse\, Courtroom 5350\n832 E. 4th Street\nParking is available in the nearby parking deck at the corner of McDowell and 4th streets. \nJoin us for the Carbon Plan Hearing on Wednesday\, April 10 at 7:00 pm at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in uptown Charlotte. The Charlotte hearing is one of four in-person hearings being held across the state to take public comment on Duke Energy’s proposed changes to the NC Carbon Plan originally approved by the Utilities Commission in December\, 2022. \nOn April 10th before the Charlotte hearing\, a press conference and rally will be held at 5:00 pm behind the Courthouse\, 832 E. Fourth Street. \nThe Carbon Plan significantly impacts every North Carolinian – from air quality and public health to economic opportunities and environmental sustainability. Organizers intend to use the rally to call out the NCUC and their lack of power against Duke Energy thus far. \nSpeakers at the rally will discuss the negative impacts the updated Carbon Plan will continue to have on BIPOC and low-income individuals already struggling to pay their energy bills. Community leaders and energy advocates will share insights on how North Carolina communities can build a collective voice. Attendees will walk away with actionable steps to voice their concerns and shape the plan’s direction during this public comment process.

SUMMARY:Webinar: How to Be a Citizen Intervenor (part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Please join BXE and regulatory expert Nancy LaPlaca as they unpack Duke Energy Carolina’s (DEC’s) fuel docket in four one-hour webinars. (The first webinar is Thursday\, December 7th.)\n\nWhy the fuel docket? Because Duke’s much-criticized rush to build more gas plants is dependent on fuel to keep those plants going. DEC (and DEP) are planning to run these fossil gas plants for 30 years\, but how much pollution will that create\, and how much risk to ratepayers for increasingly volatile gas costs? Duke Energy conveniently ignores the enormous effect that fossil gas has on our climate\, a stunning 86 times worse than CO2 emissions from coal power.\n\nLearn about how a docket works: how to intervene\, and what to look for in sometimes-voluminous filings. Learn how to make a difference on critical policy issues that will affect our future\, our climate\, good local clean energy jobs\, reduce air and water pollution\, and our pocketbooks.\n\n\nRegister for the webinar here.
