SUMMARY:Make Your Citizen Science Project Count: Strategies to Produce Quality Data
DESCRIPTION:Citizen science encompasses a wide variety of kinds of projects that produce data — from community science activities to public participation in scientific research. A goal of the scientific process is to produce unbiased\, transparent\, and reproducible data\, regardless of who is doing the work and when it is occurring. A quality assurance project plan\, or project plan\, provides the framework to produce these type of data\, increasing the chance they can used for their intended purpose and maximum impact. Join this webinar to learn how citizen science groups have successfully integrated quality assurance approaches into their projects to help answer their community’s environmental and public health questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here. \nSpeakers:\nJill Carr\, Coastal Data Scientist at Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership\nBrian Magi\, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at UNC Charlotte\, Member of the CleanAIRE NC Board of Directors\nSergio S. Ruiz Cordova\, Data Coordinator at Alabama Water Watch\nDirk Felton\, Research Scientist IV at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation\nModerator: Nora Conlon\, Quality Assurance Chemist at US Environmental Protection Agency \nThe US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) works to protect public health and the environment. This webinar was supported by EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD). ORD is the scientific research arm of EPA. Its leading-edge research informs Agency decisions and supports the emerging needs of EPA stakeholders\, including the Agency’s state\, tribal and community partners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore the webinar\, check out US EPA’s Quality Assurance Handbook for Citizen Science Projects for step-by-step guidance on how to create a quality assurance project plan for your next citizen science project.

SUMMARY:Pulling Back the Curtain: Who's Charting our Energy Future?
DESCRIPTION:How does North Carolina incentivize clean energy production and infrastructure? What are the rules governing household electricity rates? How are we helping families adopt rooftop solar and electric vehicles\, and what more could we be doing? \nAll of these crucial decisions involve the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC)\, a group of seven appointed regulators who wield immense power over our energy and climate policy. Come learn how this little-known state agency works\, and how a few people can make a huge difference to NC’s clean energy future. \nPulling Back the Curtain: Who’s Charting Our Energy Future?\nClass 1: The Regulatory Process in North Carolina\nRegister Today \nUtility companies benefit from NCUC proceedings dominated by complex and arcane policy arguments that can feel inaccessible to many energy advocates. The goal of this course is to explain in plain language how the current regulatory system works\, and how advocates and nonprofits can get involved to move this system in a better direction. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nWhat is the NCUC\, and why it’s important;\nHow we can create a system that’s more just\, and that puts people over profits;\nWhy our current policies are incentivizing utilities to hang onto fossil fuels\, and what we can do to change that;\nAnd much more.\n\nClass Dates: \n\nTuesday\, September 21\nTuesday\, October 12\nTuesday\, October 26\nTuesday\, November 9\nTuesday\, November 23\nTuesday\, December 14\n\nBy understanding how the NCUC works\, we can positively affect policy outcomes and accelerate North Carolina’s transition to a clean energy economy. \nRegister now at https://cleanairenc.org/nc-energy-webinar-series/.

SUMMARY:Webinar: NC Haze Plan
DESCRIPTION:According to air quality monitoring data\, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is ranked as the ninth most HAZE pollution burdened park in the United States. Haze pollution comes from coal plants\, industrial facilities\, vehicles\, and other sources and is made up of the same pollutants that harm people’s health. The North Carolina Division of Air Quality\, the state’s air quality regulator\, is currently updating its plan that is supposed to make reasonable progress toward improving air quality and visibility in Class 1 areas (like Joyce-Kilmer-Slickrock and Linville Gorge Wilderness Areas and Great Smoky Mountains National park). But despite clear authority to fully review all the pollution-causing haze and all polluting sources in the state\, DAQ has chosen to ignore nitrogen oxides\, particulate matter\, and over 26 haze-polluting facilities\, including major coal plants. \nOn September 30\, CleanAIRE NC\, The National Parks Conservation Association\, Sierra Club\, and Environment North Carolina are co-hosting a webinar to discuss the state’s inadequate haze plan. A panel of experts will discuss where the state’s proposal falls short and offer concerned citizens and outdoor enthusiasts ways to advocate for a stronger State Implementation Plan that addresses haze pollution and makes our parks and communities healthier\, cleaner places to explore and play. \nIf you are interested in joining this important webinar\, take a moment to register by going here: https://cleanairenc.salsalabs.org/NCHazeWebinar/index.html
