A Tale of Two Neighborhoods: New Interactive Story Map Visualizes Environmental Injustice in the Historic West End

by Calvin Cupini

Communities in Charlotte’s Historic West End frequently live in close proximity to major sources of harmful air pollution. For the past several years Clean Air Carolina has been partnering with community residents to tackle this environmental justice challenge, working together to monitor local air quality, convene stakeholders, write reports, and hold meetings with public officials.

Clean Air Carolina recently produced a brand new tool to tell the story of the Historic West End’s air quality problems. Our new “Story Map” features interactive images and maps that allow readers to dive deeper into the context and data surrounding a specific case of environmental injustice. Readers can also learn how Historic West End residents are rising to meet this challenge, and how Clean Air Carolina is expanding this community science model into a statewide air monitoring network.
