On December 30th, 2022, the NC Utilities Commission released the inaugural Carbon Plan to decarbonize our state by 70% by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The Commission reaffirmed the State’s commitment to reaching those goals. However, it also allows Duke Energy to continue using methane gas to “preserve reliability and cut carbon emissions.” The problem is methane is worse than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping pollutant.
