Last month, CleanAIRE NC teamed up with Sustain Charlotte and other partners to take a stand for our green spaces. We’re urging Mecklenburg County to increase funding for Charlotte-area greenways, parks, and nature preserves. This isn’t just about preserving natural beauty—our parks and green spaces have a direct impact on our health and well-being, and it’s time to rally for their support.
In our recent letter of support to the Board of County Commissioners, CleanAIRE NC’s Advocacy Manager, Brittany Griffin, highlighted some eye-opening facts: did you know that trees and vegetation in parks can help reduce air pollution? The Environmental Protection Agency has reported that green infrastructure plays a crucial role in reducing particulate matter pollution, which can have significant health implications.
It’s time for action! We believe that parks and green spaces provide a multitude of benefits, from promoting good health to driving economic growth. Check out the Carolina Thread Trail report to delve deeper into the benefits.
Park & Recreation has been chronically underfunded, and with more and more people moving to our region, now is the time to fully invest in our shared open spaces.
We’re calling on you to join us in asking the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners for increased funding by signing Sustain Charlotte’s petition. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to speak directly to the Board of County Commissioners at the upcoming Budget Public Hearing on Thursday, May 23. This is our chance to drive change and ensure that our greenways, parks, and nature preserves receive the funding they deserve.
Our parks and green spaces have been the heart of our community, providing us with countless memories and experiences. It’s time to preserve and invest in them for generations to come.
Visit Sustain Charlotte’s website to learn more about the cause and sign up to speak at the budget public hearing on May 23.
You can also support Sustain Charlotte’s effort to increase funding for the Bicycle Priority Network so they can double the miles of bike lanes built per year. Sign the petition to help meet the goal of completing the network before 2040.
If you plan to attend the May 23 public hearing, please email Sustain Charlotte Advocacy Manager Hope Wright at [email protected] to let her know! Park & Recreation advocates will gather at the bike display inside the building (just outside of the chamber) at 6:15pm and sit together during the hearing.
