This Earth Day, North Carolina is brimming with opportunities to celebrate our planet and explore solutions for a sustainable future.

From the mountains to the coast, communities are gearing up for a host of engaging events and activities to mark this important day. Whether you’re looking for outdoor family fun or eager to get your hands dirty with local cleanup, there’s an Earth Day event happening near you.

Here are some of the key celebrations taking place around the state:

Asheville Metro

Spring Festival | April 26 | 1-4pm Lake Julian Park in Arden

Join Buncombe County Parks & Recreation in a celebration of Earth Day and the spring season! Games, pontoon boat tours, Earth Day crafts and education, kayak demos from waterways, and more. Make your own mini greenhouse and visit with community partners. This free event is open to all ages. No registration is required.

Chapel Hill/Carrboro

Carrboro Earth Day & Open Streets | April 6 | 12-4pm Weaver Street in Downtown Carrboro

Celebrate Earth Day with an event that brings people together for an afternoon of eco-friendly activities and outdoor fun. Enjoy a car-free Weaver Street as downtown Carrboro transforms into vibrant spaces for cycling, walking, and exploring green initiatives. Let’s make Earth Day a celebration of nature, sustainability, and collective action toward a greener future!

Keep Carrboro Beautiful | April 22 | 5:30-7:30pm Drakeford Library Complex

Bring the family out to help clean-up the Town of Carrboro and prevent trash from entering our local streams. Bring your work gloves and dress to be outside. Volunteers will meet at the Drakeford at 5:30pm and clean-up supplies are provided. Groups are welcome to participate.

Down to Earth | April 26 | 11am-3pm Arts Center

Down to Earth is an art exhibition taking through April 27. Artists were invited to submit works of art made from recycled, natural, or sustainable materials and/or art themed around the environment, earth, climate change, sustainability and the impact of humanity on the environment. For the special event on April 26th, various conservation groups will be present to talk about the important work that they are doing in the County and beyond. There will also be electric vehicles and e-bikes on view for people to learn more about sustainable transportation options.

Charlotte Metro

Charlotte Earth Day | April 12 | 10am-5pm The Independent Picture House

Charlotte’s largest annual Earth Day celebration brings together community members to celebrate our environment, engage families with fun educational activities, foster lifelong connections with nature, and connect attendees with environmentally conscious organizations and businesses from the Charlotte area. The event is open to all members of the community, including children and their families, young adults, educators, and everyone passionate about sustainability. It will also feature dozens of exhibitors representing Charlotte-based organizations and businesses.

UNC Charlotte Earth Day Festival | April 3 | 10am-2pm Belk Plaza

Join the Office of Sustainability and 30+ organizations from UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte region for our kickoff to Earth Month! This annual event will feature student-led organizations, campus departments, local nonprofits, and government agencies sharing their work to support environmental stewardship and sustainability efforts.

Earth Day with Kids in Nature Day | April 5 | 10am-1pm Squirrel Lake Park

Have fun while learning about the environment! Kids In Nature Day will keep kids busy with fishing, eco-friendly exhibits & vendors, animal explorations, nature crafts, games, and much more. The event and all activities are free.

Durham

Earth Day Festival | April 27 | 12-5pm Durham Central Park

Join Durham Parks & Recreation in celebrating Earth Day 2025 as we unite to honor and protect the planet. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the incredible potential everyone has to drive positive change for the environment. From individuals to communities, and businesses to governments, we all hold the power to create a sustainable future.

2025 Festival highlights include an Earth Day Market, a Sustainable Transportation Expo, the Family Fun Zone, an Earth Day Parade, and much more. The festival is free and open to the public, rain or shine!

Fayetteville

Earth Day is Every Day Fesitval | April 12 | 9am-3pm Festival Park

This fun-filled day is free and open to the community! The event will feature a 5k and 10k trail race, a kid’s zone, an electric car show, an electric E-waste drive, and solid waste trucks. Come out and learn about the environmental, economic, and social resources in the Fayetteville and Cumberland County community!

Gastonia Metro

Riverfest 2025 | May 3 | All day in McAdenville

Celebrate the Catawba River with live music, local craft beer, food trucks, kids’ activities, artisan vendors, a Floating Concert, and more at RiverFest!

Greensboro

Earth Day Celebration | April 26 | 1-4pm Keeley Park

This free festival includes a wide range of activities and educational opportunities—from tutorials of environmentally-friendly lawn care practices to demos of renewable energy technology to animal interactions.

Raleigh

Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration | April 25 | 4-9pm Dorothea Dix Park (Flowers Field)

Join the City of Raleigh, in partnership with We Plant it Forward, for this FREE community event to explore earth-conscious vendors and organizations while enjoying live music, games, and activities for all ages. Organizers will show the family-friendly movie The Wild Robot to conclude the event.

Winston-Salem

Piedmont Earth Day Fair | April 26 | 10am-4pm Winston-Salem Fairgrounds

The biggest Earth Day celebration and one-day environmental education event in North Carolina! Come by for a day of environmental education and fun, including food trucks, music, local vendors, and activities for all ages. Students in grades K-12 can also submit their Earth Day-inspired artwork to display at the fair (see website link for more details).

Wilmington

Wilmington Earth Day | April 26 | 12-6pm Long Leaf Park

Come celebrate Earth Day with free live music, an abundance of food, beer, a Kids’ EcoZone and more at the Wilmington Earth Day Celebration. This fantastic event usually features over 70 different exhibitors, vendors, music, food trucks and more.
