In Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, a transformative event reshaped American history. It was then that the last enslaved people in the United States finally learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
This pivotal moment, the true end of slavery, is honored annually as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day. For over a century and a half, Juneteenth has been a powerful beacon, reminding us of the enduring fight for Black liberation and the vital work that remains on the path to racial justice.
As North Carolina honors Black history and resilience this year, we invite you to explore some of the exciting events planned across the state.
