Reflecting on the past year, I’m deeply grateful for our collective impact on clean air and environmental justice. CleanAIRE NC has expanded its reach, empowering individuals and amplifying community voices. Our focus on a healthier, equitable North Carolina has driven every initiative.
Community engagement fueled our advocacy for a robust Clean Energy Carbon Plan, demonstrating the growing demand for sustainable policies. Our Climate Ambassadors network expanded, equipping members with vital climate solutions knowledge. These Ambassadors now drive crucial conversations and inspire action within their communities.
Recognizing the power of data, we welcomed over 60 new air sensor hosts to grow our air quality monitoring network. This real-time data empowers communities to effectively address local pollution hotspots and communicate their environmental realities.
Understanding the link between air quality and public health, we provided specialized training to health professionals. They are now better equipped to educate patients and advocate for protective policies. Our emissions reporting form empowered citizens to voice their air quality concerns, holding polluters accountable and driving regulatory change.
These achievements represent tangible impacts: empowered communities and a future with clean air for all North Carolinians. Looking ahead, we’ll strengthen partnerships, advocate for strong policies, and empower communities to act.
My deepest gratitude to our staff, volunteers, board, and supporters. Your unwavering commitment fuels our success. Together, we breathe life into change.

Through our partnerships we’ve installed several new EV charging stations in Charlotte’s Historic West End, driving equity and sustainable mobility. We’re also engaging with rural communities to address their unique transportation challenges and support cleaner transportation options.

The 9th Annual NC BREATHE Conference brought together diverse voices to explore the critical links between our health and the environment, offering a platform for cutting-edge research, policy discussions, and community engagement.

We’re partnering with communities across NC to protect air quality and push for change. We launched new air monitoring networks in Sampson and Mecklenburg Counties, equipping residents with tools to track pollution and demand stronger protections. We also supported community-led EJ efforts in Durham, Fayetteville, and Chapel Hill.
We are honored to partner with CleanAIRE NC to install air monitoring devices across Durham. The data the monitors provide helps to strengthen our advocacy for a safer and cleaner Durham, particularly in its marginalized communities.

In Spring of 2024, CleanAIRE NC and our partners hosted Charlotte’s Earth Day festival! Over five hundred people came out to enjoy hands-on activities, environmental education, and outdoor family fun.

CleanAIRE NC was honored to have Community Science Manager Daisha Wall appointed to Governor Cooper’s Environmental Justice Advisory Council. Our representation on this council allows us to advocate for the needs of frontline communities and ensure that environmental justice is a priority in state policy.

CleanAIRE NC is invested in building a strong network of environmental advocates. Our new training workshop and in-depth advocacy manual equip individuals with the skills to effectively engage policymakers, mobilize communities, and champion clean air solutions.
In capturing CleanAIRE NC’s work, I have witnessed their unwavering dedication to environmental justice advocacy, education, and overall commitment to clean air. Their efforts are truly inspiring!

By equipping health professionals with the tools to identify and address environmental health concerns, we’re empowering them to protect their patients and communities.

We mobilized hundreds of North Carolinians to join the fight for a stronger Carbon Plan, one that’s centered around clean energy and community well-being.

We’ve teamed up with the City of Charlotte and Sol Nation to transform under-resourced communities through the GreenPrints initiative. Driven by community feedback, we’re promoting sustainable development and healthier neighborhoods through initiatives focused on resilience, energy affordability, green mobility, electrification, and workforce development.
CleanAIRE NC has been so helpful with the knowledge they’ve shared with us…in our fight for clean air against Fay Block. Thank you for helping us monitor the quality of the air in our community.

When people are equipped with the right knowledge and tools, they’re empowered to take action and chart a better future. To that end, our programming teaches our members about climate change and air quality, engages them in data collection, and empowers them to take action in the community and political sphere.
Community Science volunteers track and help interpret local air quality data, captured by low-cost air monitoring devices. All across the state, scientists and change-makers can use the data we collect to improve the quality of the air we breathe.
As advocates, we organize and take action for policy solutions that lead to better health for our communities. We provide the training and tools to help our members hold polluters accountable and push for stronger climate and clean air protections.
No community should suffer more environmental burdens because of their race or socioeconomic status. Our environmental justice efforts target the root causes of the damage, identify its disparate impacts, and chart paths to restoration.
Doctors, nurses, and health professionals are among the most trusted messengers on the health impacts of air pollution and climate change. The CleanAIRE NC Health program leverages these trusted voices to advocate for a healthier, more resilient future.
We’re equipping North Carolinians with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to protect their health and advance clean air and climate solutions.
We’d like to express our deepest gratitude to our donors for your unwavering commitment to our mission. Every achievement you’ve read about in this report stands as a testament to your incredible generosity, and with your continued support, we’re confident we can achieve even greater impact in the years to come. Thank you for being the driving force behind our success.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Jemison, our close friend and longtime Vice Chair for our Board of Directors. Michael lost his courageous battle with cancer last year, leaving a void in our hearts and a significant mark on CleanAIRE NC.
Michael’s passion for CleanAIRE NC and our mission was evident in his every action. Since joining our Board in 2019, he served on both our Executive Committee and Finance Committee, where he actively helped to shape the organization’s future direction. His leadership and strong voice provided invaluable guidance and a steady hand.
Beyond his dedication, Michael brought his warmth and genuine kindness everywhere he went. Everyone who has ever had a conversation with Michael will remember his remarkable ability to connect with people and foster a collaborative and supportive environment. We will dearly miss his insightful perspectives and positive spirit.
