NC BREATHE 2023: Using Our Power for Climate Justice

Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in NC BREATHE 2023! Nearly 200 people joined us in Charlotte or online to hear from inspiring speakers and engage in interactive panel discussions featuring community advocates and leading voices in the fields of health and environmental justice.

Speaker presentations and recordings of all sessions and panel discussions are now available.

This year’s conference brought together a diverse group of North Carolina stakeholders and communities to examine how the climate crisis impacts health and equity in our state, and how we can all work together to build solutions. Attendees had the opportunity to network with other advocates, community leaders, health professionals, researchers, students, and policymakers, exchanging ideas and lessons learned from the fight against climate change.

Next Steps:

We hope you are feeling inspired and ready to build equitable climate solutions. Now the real work begins. Here are four ways you can keep the conversation going and promote health and environmental justice in North Carolina:

Join Our Health Advocacy Network

Are you a health professional looking to support climate action? Learn how you can leverage your trusted voice to advocate for equitable solutions that improve health in your community. Stand with doctors, nurses, public health experts, and others around the state who are raising awareness on climate, health, and equity.

Strengthen Air and Water Protections Surrounding Hog Farms

Industrial-scale livestock facilities can leak untreated animal waste into the air or water, posing huge health risks for nearby communities. And these operations are heavily concentrated in rural, BIPOC communities in easterns North Carolina, where they’re fueling an environmental justice crisis. Contact your representatives and demand stronger protections for our air, water, and community health against hog farm pollution.

Look Out For Our Post-Conference Report

We will be publishing a report highlighting the underlying themes that arose from the conference proceedings and participant discussions, with recommendations for North Carolina policymakers to support those most vulnerable to air pollution and climate change.

Look for it this summer and share it with your elected representatives.
