Environmental Justice in North Carolina

Low-income communities and communities of color unfairly shoulder a greater burden of pollution and harmful effects. Pollution can combine with other sources and compound the impacts on health over time. These cumulative impacts are a lived experience of many such North Carolina communities.

No community should suffer greater environmental burdens because of race or socioeconomic status.
CleanAIRE NC’s Environmental Justice program collaborates with communities for change. Read on to learn more and how you can get involved.

What We're Doing

Listening & Connecting

Our first responsibility is to listen to concerns and understand the root causes of local environmental and health impacts. We connect individuals and groups to services within our programs to provide resources to support community-led advocacy, helping to ensure decision-makers hear their voices.

Promoting Fair Policies

We work alongside impacted communities to develop strategies for a healthier future. We push for policies that prioritize the well-being of environmentally burdened communities and educate the public about disparities.

Moving Toward Environmental Justice

We shed light on the uneven distribution of environmental hazards and amplify community voices. We bring greater awareness to concerns and uplift community-identified solutions. CleanAIRE NC partners with grassroots organizations to bring about the change their communities wish to see.
