    Dr. Wilson is a Professor at the University of Maryland, where he directs The Health, Environmental, and Economic Justice Lab with decades of experience in environmental health.

    School of Global Health, Meharry Medical College
    A recognized expert in global health, robotic minimally invasive surgery, and bariatric surgery, Dr. Johnson has dedicated much of her work to health equity, surgical sustainability, and environmental justice.

    Howard University School of Law
    Lee is recognized as an environmental justice pioneer, thought leader, and founder of the EJ movement in the U.S. He formerly served as the Senior Policy Advisor for Environmental Justice at the EPA’s office on EJ and external civil rights.
  • Jasmine Washington, JD
    Southern Environmental Law Center
    As a Glynn Key Associate Attorney, Washington researches cases involving Title VI, the federal civil rights law that requires local governments and other recipients of federal funding to ensure their programs do not discriminate.

NC Health & Community Resilience – A Case Story

This panel will move beyond theory to explore how North Carolina can build lasting resilience in the face of increasingly frequent and intense planetary events like Hurricane Helene and widespread forest fires. The discussion will take a case study approach, examining what worked, what didn’t, and what must be done differently to protect our communities and our state’s health.

Moderated by Keith McDade, this session will convene notable community leaders to discuss a multi-faceted approach to resilience. The conversation will focus on how state-level policy, institutional preparedness, and community-led action can converge to create a more resilient North Carolina.

Key discussion points will include:

  • The Legislative and Policy Response: Julie Mayfield will provide insight into the challenges and opportunities for creating resilience through state policy and funding. Gray Jernigan will discuss the role of government relations and land conservation in supporting nature-based solutions to mitigate the impact of climate events.
  • Community-Led Solutions and Health Equity: Tiffany Fant will bring the critical perspective of on-the-ground community action, highlighting how weather events can impact different populations and the need for a comprehensive response and recovery. The panel will also feature an Opportunity to Panel for a key public health or emergency management professional to discuss health and safety in the aftermath of these events.

This panel will offer a comprehensive look at how a collaborative, multi-sector approach is essential to safeguarding the future of North Carolina’s health and well-being.

Drawing on her extensive background in pharmacology and environmental toxicology, as well as her work in community engagement and research at North Carolina Central University, Dr. Hoffler connects the scientific realities of air pollution to its direct impacts on student health and learning. The focus will be on empowering students to move beyond awareness and into actionable leadership.

Heat Mitigation: Listening to Community and Creating Solutions

Rising temperatures pose a significant health crisis for North Carolina. This panel will explore concrete solutions for heat mitigation in North Carolina. We’ll examine how cities, counties, and municipalities are combating the public health impacts of extreme heat through strategies like cool pavements, tree planting, and early warning systems. The discussion will also highlight the critical role of the state legislature in advancing policies and funding to protect our most vulnerable communities.
